Ali Amin

Age: 25

Trade: Construction Operations

Borough: Hackney

Apprenticeship: Level 2 Construction Operations

College: Flower Skills

Background:  Before Ali came to K10 he was unemployed and due to having previous convictions, he felt this hindered his opportunities further. When his probation worker called up, K10 were more than happy to help Ali start his apprenticeship journey.

What happened next: After impressing Jack at the interview stage, despite his past, Ali was put onto a Level 2 Construction Operations apprenticeship in Hackney.

During the Apprenticeship: ‘Being on site gave me an understanding of something I’ve never experienced before. Considering I had a low amount of industry knowledge in general, everything was a learning curve. I was able to gain a lot of insight into not just the trade I was studying but other, relevant trades such as site management and engineering which is what I’m getting into now. I was lucky enough to spend my entire apprenticeship on the Berkeley Homes project in Hackney, Woodberry Down. During this time, I worked with two different contractors but I feel that I gained the most experience and knowledge from my time with Landmark. I worked with them for around 9 months. I enjoyed working with this team the most as I learned so much here and the management I was under were so helpful, they gave me everything I needed from the support and work on site. I was able to get my Construction Operations qualification and on top of this, the site I was on also put me forward to get qualifications on top such as my Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme.’

‘If there is one piece of advice I can give to someone starting their apprenticeship it is to be enthusiastic, eager to learn and go beyond what you’re asked to do because you get out what you put in at the end of the day. When it comes to K10, saying they helped me turn my life around is an understatement, they gave me a chance when no one else would and I will always be grateful for how they’ve changed my life for the better’.

After the Apprenticeship: After completing his Level 2 in Construction Operations, Ali has started his Site Engineering apprenticeship with K10. He is currently on site with Fairview Homes in Hackney.
