“My skills and ability have flown up”.

Charlie Marchant-Buchanan

Before starting his apprenticeship, Charlie was a semi-pro athlete and footballer, but, because of injury early on in his career, Charlie was unable to continue on that path, full-time. Nevertheless, Charlie took his work-ethic, dedication, and insatiable desire to succeed and applied it to a plumbing apprenticeship with K10, an opportunity offered through Family Mosaic’s apprenticeship scheme… Two years later, Charlie has been taken on by a contractor as a fully-qualified plumber and has a secure, above-average income, and fantastic opportunities to progress in his career and do what he wants in life.

“It was very exciting!”

During his apprenticeship, Charlie worked on some of London’s most significant sites, including Berkeley’s Kidbrooke Village development, and although it was hard work, the experience improved Charlie’s confidence and ability. Charlie showed resilience and creativity throughout his apprenticeship, which has definitely paid off: “It’s changed me as a person; I’m more grown up and mature. I can deal with problems myself, instead of asking other people. My skills and ability have flown up”.

Alex, Charlie’s apprentice manager, had this to say: “Having worked with Charlie over the last 12 months, I have seen him progress to become a very accomplished and talented plumber. Charlie has always been very professional and is an extremely easy guy to work with due to his friendly and humble attitude. Feedback from his supervisors has always been very positive; they were always impressed with his work ethic and ability to pick things up quickly. He has shown true dedication to complete his apprenticeship, overcoming several hurdles, and I see Charlie having a very bright future in the construction industry”.

So, what next for Charlie? “I had a great experience and am looking to use this qualification to bring a stable income in”. Successfully completing his plumbing apprenticeship at Kind & Co. has meant that Charlie’s wage has increased by nearly three times! This is not uncommon. Many K10 apprentices have a significant wage-uplift upon completion – an average of 2.5 times.

Looking forward, Charlie’s hoping to use this extra money to treat his family more (we don’t want to give too much away here…). But that’s not all; Charlie has big long-term plans: he wants to use his stable plumbing career as a platform to set up an athletics training academy in New Zealand in the future. Aiming high is what it’s all about!

There’s no doubt that Charlie fulfilled his potential during his apprenticeship, but, clearly, there’s so much more to come. From all of us here at K10, Family Mosaic and Tower Hamlets College, well done Charlie. You deserved it.
