Murrain in the Fast Lane…To Success! Nathan Completes His Level 3!

Nathan MURRAIN Case Study

Nathan Murrain

Age: 23

Trade: Electrical Installation

Borough: Haringey

Apprenticeship: Level 3 Electrical Installations

Background: Before starting his apprenticeship with K10, Nathan was studying at a local college towards his Level 2 Electrical Installations Diploma. He expressed that he found it difficult to find full-time employment as there was not a lot of opportunities where he lived. This led to him to look for an apprenticeship and is where he found us.

What happened next: Nathan flew through his interview, having previously completed his diploma, and was placed on site with RB Emersons in his home borough of Haringey.

During the Apprenticeship: Nathan started his apprenticeship on site with RB Emersons in Haringey and stayed with them as they moved over to Tower Hamlets which is where he spent the duration of his apprenticeship. He said ‘what I enjoyed most was the fact that I was getting paid to learn and do something that I really enjoyed. The on-site experience I got was amazing. The sub-contractor I got placed with, RB Emersons were brilliant. They were very patient with me as I was still learning a lot of new things but they also allowed me to work independently doing first and second fixing. This enabled me to get a lot of experience. There was a really good balance between the electricians I was working with on-site and this prevented me from ever getting bored. From working with the electricians mates to the other apprentices, we helped each other learn new things and get new understandings. The variety of tasks I was doing made site really enjoyable. I was doing things such as containment, wiring, and setting up temporary lighting, all which went towards my NVQ.’

‘An apprenticeship is a good way to get on the right track to a good career. If I could go back, I would have bought my tools earlier on. This way I would have always been ready to do a job and never had to borrow tools off of anyone, they were there when I needed them. My apprenticeship manager, Jack, always done everything he could to sort any problems I had. He was always at the other end of the phone when I needed to ask him a question. K10 helped me start my career as an electrician and allowed me to get my qualifications sorted and start full-time employment as a qualified electrician.’

After the apprenticeship: Since completing his apprenticeship, Nathan has been taken on full-time as a self-employed electrical improver with RB Emersons and is earning up to triple of what he was earning as an apprentice!
